Why Choose a Breast Reduction?

Breast reduction surgery, also known as reduction mammoplasty, is a procedure that removes excess fat, glandular tissue, and skin to reduce the size of the breasts. Dr. Kreitzberg understands the unique challenges that come with having large breasts, and many of our patients seek breast reduction for the following reasons:

Medical Benefits of Breast Reduction

  • Relieve Chronic Pain: Large breasts can lead to chronic back, neck, and shoulder pain due to the weight they place on the body. Many women find almost immediate relief from these debilitating symptoms after breast reduction surgery.
  • Improve Posture: The weight of large breasts can lead to poor posture and spinal strain. Reducing the size of the breasts can improve posture and help align the spine.
  • Prevent Skin Irritation: Some women develop skin irritation, rashes, or even ulcers under the breast fold due to friction from bra straps or the weight of the breasts. A breast reduction can reduce these issues and improve overall skin health.

Aesthetic Benefits of Breast Reduction

  • Enhanced Proportions: A breast reduction creates a more balanced figure, improving body symmetry and proportions.
  • Improved Confidence: Many women feel more confident and comfortable in their own skin after reducing breast size, as it can help with swimwear, bras, and clothes fitting better and reduce the self-consciousness often associated with large breasts.
  • More Youthful Appearance: Removing excess tissue can give the breasts a more youthful, lifted appearance, helping to restore the natural contours that may have been lost over time.

Difference Between a Breast Reduction and a Breast Lift

While both a breast reduction and breast lift (mastopexy) target the aesthetic improvement of the breasts, the procedures serve different purposes:

  • Breast Reduction: Involves the removal of excess tissue (fat, glandular tissue, and skin) to reduce breast size. This procedure not only reshapes and lifts the breasts but also relieves discomfort and improves the proportionality of the breasts with the rest of the body.
  • Breast Lift: Focuses on removing excess skin and lifting sagging breasts to a more youthful position without reducing breast volume. If you want to lift your breasts but maintain or increase their size, a breast lift may be the right choice.

Whether you are choosing a breast reduction or a lift, your breasts will be lifted, reshaped, and the size of the areola adjusted.  The key difference is the desired breast size as a breast lift maintains the same size and a reduction decreasing the size of your breasts.

The Breast Reduction Procedure: What to Expect

breast reduction at Kreitzberg Plastic Surgery is performed under general anesthesia, meaning you will be asleep during the procedure. Here’s what you can expect:

  1. Incision Placement: Dr. Kreitzberg will make discreet incisions around the areola, along the lower central breast and along the lower fold of the breasts strategically placing them to be well-hidden under clothing or a bra.  The length of the incision along the bottom of the breast is dependent of the amount of skin and tissue that is removed, as a longer incision is needed if more tissue is removed.
  2. Tissue Removal: Excess fat, glandular tissue, and skin are carefully removed from specific areas of the breast to reduce size and reshape the breast for a more balanced appearance.
  3. Nipple and Areola Adjustment: The nipple-areolar complex is not removed, but rather repositioned higher on the breast to create a more youthful look.
  4. Closure: After the tissue is reshaped, the tissue is suspended with sutures and the incisions are closed with sutures, which may leave some scarring that fades over time.  No drains are used.  You are placed in a compression bra at the completion of surgery.

Dr. Kreitzberg performs the procedure at a surgical center in Tulsa, and patients go home the same day.

Recovery After Breast Reduction

Recovering from breast reduction surgery requires a bit of patience, but the benefits are well worth the effort. Here’s what to expect:

  • Compression Bra: After surgery, you’ll wear a compression bra to reduce swelling and support the breasts during the healing process. Compression bras are typically worn for about six weeks, and Dr Kreitzberg recommends a supportive bra for at least the first year after surgery.
  • Pain Management: Most patients experience moderate discomfort for the first 2-3 days, which is managed with prescribed medications. Over-the-counter pain relievers are typically sufficient to control discomfort and can be used after the initial recovery period.
  • Swelling and Bruising: Expect some swelling and bruising, which typically resolves within 2-3 weeks.
  • Return to Normal Activities: Most patients return to work after 1-3 weeks and can gradually resume exercise and other activities within 4-6 weeks. Dr. Kreitzberg will guide you through the appropriate timeline for physical activity based on your healing process.
  • Follow-Up Appointments: Dr. Kreitzberg will schedule follow-up appointments to monitor your progress and ensure proper healing.

While you may have some initial discomfort, the long-term results of breast reduction surgery are often life-changing, providing significant physical relief and an enhanced appearance.
